P-30 auto park brake richard 10-11-04
Anybody know how the p-30 auto park brake works or where there is manual. My won't hold the coach on a gas station driveway.
Re: P-30 auto park brake Bill 10-6-08
I would like a manual system to replace the poor design that uses hydralic pressure to release. A manual system to engage and release should not be hard to design. Does anyone have one? Placing gear shift into park should not be required. Only a light and buzzer to warn before moving. Why not use the existing foot pedal to engage and pull handle to release.
Re: P-30 auto park brake Paul 1-2-05
This P-30 is noted for the miserable braking system. It has a drum beake on the drive shaft, with all kinds od switches both electrical and hydraulic. It is common for them to go out, and some times as you are driving! What an experience that is!!! Anyway, you either need an adjustment or replacement of brake shoes on the emergency brake (auto park) system. Just be careful that system has about 1200 lbs of force and not to be played with lightly.

I read with interest about the P-30 park brake system. My coach,1997 Dutch Star, will roll with both the park brake set and the transmission lever in park. I read Scott's explanation of how it works. My question is, can a backyard mechinic fix it or does it have to go to the shop? Also, with all the trouble people are having, has there been a recall? Thanks very much for any help that anyone can give. Jess

I have a 96 Bounder, the auto park light stays on. I checked the fluids and they are full. I can here it disengage when I take it out of park but I can not hear it engage when I put it into park. What do you think? No one around here knows anything about them.

Thanks,
Bruce
Re: P-30 auto park brake Scott 10-18-04
The autopark system is totally different from traditional parking brakes.

First of all the Park position on your RV is no different the the Neutral position.

The autopark system is a hydraulic system the engages to lock the coach in place while parked. There is a reservoir of fluid (Usually Transmission fluid) located behind the transmission. This system is powered by a pump and controled by two switches. One switch engages the system. The other disengages the system. These switches are both pressure switches. This system work entirely on hydraulic pressure.

Is your AutoPark Light on?

When you put the unit in Park do you hear the pump engage?

Most likely the pressure switch that engages the system is bad.

The switches are located under an inspection place close to the fluid reservoir.

I am currently trying to solve a "auto park brake" problem.

Ours stays ingauged regardless of the position of the shift, R, D, 1 or 2.

I finally had to machinicaly disingauge it to get home.

Does anyone have a section of the maintenance manual on the auto park brake?

Thanks in Advance
Bud
Re: P-30 auto park brake kai 8-6-05
The problem started with the parking light coming ON all while driving, then I stopped and put my lever in park, the light stayed ON,when shiffting into drive the light went DIM,and the brake released, the light was fliggerind DIM I contacted the dealer, they did not know the system,I then contacted G,M. directly they would not teel me anything.I went under the unit to learn the system: The Auto-brake system is a hydraulic system with its own pump and control system. When the gear shift is put in PARK a electric switch at the bottom of the steering columm,is engaged and the pressure about 1200psi is released the brake will engage the driveshaft, when turning ON the Key the AUTOPARK light is on the hydraulic pump will pressurise, and when shifting from PARK the brake will release, while underway a pressure switch will maintain pressure on the system.there are 2 switches in the box they are both hydraulic pressure swithces.on directly on the pump {green in colour} the other is in a TEE on the pipe system.{grey in colour} If you have trouble with this system replace both switches. this can be done very easely.get under the unit and remove 6 bolts from the side of the box.the system DO NOT HAVE PRESSURE ON IF THE KEY HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION.Once the box is open you will see the green and grey switches. unscrew both units and replace with new ones, cost for total repair approx $80.00us. HAPPY REPAIR.

I have a 1995 southwind on a chevy chasis and the auto park works just fine until it warms up after a one or two hundred mile trip. At which time it does not want to come out of auto park into reverse.
Re: P-30 auto park brake joe lyons 1-27-08
I had the same problem while traveling with my 1998 southwind. it lock up. im a mechanic and worked on orange co. rescues, but the parking system on them are air over electrical. so i removed the pin at the cable. to get it home. i found that the resovior was empty. it was the pressure switch that was leaking. i replaced it. purchased it from chevy dealer for 65.00. i asked them if they could replace the system with a mechanical parking instead of the one that came with the rv. they said that they couldnt do that but would sell me the parts to do it myshelf. the told me that the automatic tran. paw thats inside the tran. wasnt stronge enough to hold the rv if you forgot to put the parking brake on. that they warnt going to be liable.i carry a block of wood just incase this happens again.im the second owner of this 1998 southwind. i ck the records of the previous owmer and he replaced the same switch in 2003. i hope this helped someone. joe
Re: P-30 auto park brake Frank 1-24-08
I have the same problem. My 1998 P-32 with the 454 cu. in. engine in a Winny Brave. I absolutely love this motor home. This pre- work horse runs like a colt. It has after market cold air intake, headers and exhaust system Obviously, they were from a nop-notch vendor. I really wouldn't trade it for anything. NOW, two real problems. One the O2 sensors are sending codes and despite soaking the sensor for hours in every thing that is susposed to work, they won't budge. Any ideas bedore they start cutting and replacing pipe? The other is the BIGGIE. Yep, the in-famous auto park. Mine NEVER buzzed Never LIGHTED; but hjust s few week ago on a two thousand mile trip it just quit. I had to buy a set of big chocks and everytime we stop, my wife has to keep her foot on the brakes until I can jump out and get the chocks set. Kind of inconvient. Does anyone know of a reasonal fix that I might even do myself? I would be willing to bypass the autopark system, if I could find a way to make my transmisasion gain a "Park" feature. I would also be willing to swith trannies. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Frank
Re: P-30 auto park brake Tom 3-4-06
I have a 2000 Southwind Storm. The auto park brake appears to work OK, even though the auto park light is on on the dash. My manual says to go to the dealer! for what? I drained the fluid from the auto park resevoir. It was whitish pink. I believe that is water saturated ATF. I replaced it with mercon IV. The auto park still disengages the brake, but the pressure pump cycles on to maintain pressure every 30 seconds. Is this normal? Also my manual does not recommend any maintenance on this system ever - even after 150,000 miles. This seams rediculous.

Please help,

Tom
Re: P-30 auto park brake Charlie 11-10-07
I have a 1998 Winnebago on a Chevy P30 chassis. The auto brake system locked up, I had a mechanic remove the brake drum and take out the shoes to get the unit home. They were frozen tight. My question is this...Now the transmission will not hold in the PARK position. Is the trans PARK effected by the auto park system..or is this just a transmission linkage adjustment problem? What can I do to get the trans to hold in the PARK position?

Butch -

I have a 200 Southwind and last weekend the AutoPark got stuck. Had to disconnect the cable from the servo to get it home. I sure would appreciate a copy of the service manual or schematic diagram if you still have one.

Thank you,
Marc
Re: P-30 auto park brake Ronny Miller 1-6-08
Hi,
I have a 200 Southwind and just recently learned there were other people with the same issues I am having.
I replaced one of my switches and got it home as it locked up with me while towing my boat. It now will not engage so it will roll away if I do not put the jacks down, any suggestions?

Re: P-30 auto park brake Clarence 6-6-06
I have a 1995 Winnibago with the P-30 brake system. The problem I have is, the auto brake will not release, I had the linkage disconnected, everytime I stopped someone had to leave the coach and chock the wheels. I would very much like to know where i could purchse a repair manuel.
Re: P-30 auto park brake Bob C 11-26-05
Butch I agree with you about the three switches. I have a 2000 Workhorse P30 Chassis. Have had problems with the Auto Park system. Any info you could provide would be wounderful. Thanks
