1998 Pace Arrow brake failure C Greco 9-8-08
I recently purchased a 1998 Pace Arrow RV and when traveling thru mountains in Nevada the brakes failed. I was able to slow down by pressing repeatedly on the brakes and they went all the way to the floor. THe brake light was on. As soon as I was able to slow the home down and pull off the interstate the light went out and the brakes came back. I do not have the manual with this hime. Can anyone explain what happened and whether this is a typical reaction to overheating or something that I need to take to the shop?
Thanks,

You could have faded the brakes out but usually this is accompinied by a burning brake smell and perhaps smoke. Usually the pedal wont go to the floor though. They just catch fire/smo0ke and stink real bad. What probbably happened is the brake fluid boiled due to water contamination. The brake fluid will attract moisture as a normall mater of time. That is why the system is sealed so well. TO cure the problem the fluid needs to be flushed and have the resultant fluid checked to insure the moisture is eliminated from the system. Removing the moisture will also increase the life of the other hydraulic brake components. To change/flush the brake system on a class A I usually go through more than a gallon/4 liters jug of brake fluid. Good Luck
