4L80E tran problem william 3-14-08  
I have a 1996 4X4 chevy 2500 HD with a 6.5 motor and 4L80E tran.The truck will not move through any gear. the shifter moves through all gears on the colum smothly but nothing. could this be the cylinoids or a wiering problem.and could i get some feed back on how you feel abought the 6.5 some one said that the 6.5 has alot of problems. thanks

The first thing I'd do is to check the fluid. Maybe even do a fluid and filter change. But it sounds like you may have a major torque converter issue. You may want to take it to a shop to be looked at.

As for the 6.5TD. It's in ok motor. It's no Cummins, but it is ok. There are few weakness's that you will want to look at. A water pump that is too small; an injection pump control module overheating and a restrictive exhaust just to meantion a few. There is a few companies that specialize in these motors though. My favorite's are www.ssdieselsupply.com and www,kennedydiesel.com
