1984 Pace Arrow Tranny Rebuild/Replace? Andy 2-6-08
I've got an 84 Pace Arrow with a Chevy 454 and the clutches burned up on it last summer. It's been stationary since August with the occasional crank and idle. I'm getting ready to either rebuild or replace the transmission with a re-manufactured one. I'm not sure what transmission it has now (someone told me a 500) all I know is that it didn't have an overdrive. Would it be possible to install an upgraded transmission like a turbo transmission or one with overdrive? Would a overdrive for a 36' rig even work?

Unless this is a variant that I haven't run into (possible since I am primarily heavy duty) its a THM400 (they changed the designation in later production). The only trans that will bolt in for an overdrive is a 4L80E. Unfortunatly this is not a plug and play swap. It would need a stand alone computor and will need quite a bit of tuning to get it to work right. The 4L80E is aa quite expensive trans to buy and the computor as of a couple years ago was running 1500 plus the modifications to make it work. You should be able to get the 400 rebuilt for less than 1200 unless it realy got torn up. You can buy quite a bit of fuel for the 3 or 4 thousand dollar diffrence. (most people will never pay it back). Good Luck

Andy, Try Monster trans.com they have the kit you need. You will need to re-size your drive shaft and trans mount. The trans will handle 500+ hp and the first gear is 30% lower then the old trans. My uncle had his changed what a big diff. I have the same trans in my 33' holiday rambler as you. My uncle has a 37' pace arrow. Before from a stop light a moped would take-off faster and now with the new trans it drives like a large hot rod. with the 4.10 rear gear in O/D @65 mph the eng is at 2300rpm. let me know?
