I've got two problems with my '91 tranny: 1) it doesn't want to shift into second until it warms up. I usually wind it up in first and let it shift into drive. When it's warm, it shifts fine. It shifts really quick and strong(hard), but I like it that way. 2) this past weekend, on two SERIOUS grades, while towing an enclosed car trailer w/car, it spit quite a bit of fluid out the breather. I first thought it was engine smoke and got scared, but the engine was still running fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ed.

The info you left doesn't give a lot to go on so I will focus on the worst. The hard shift problem could be a "shift kit" but if not it indicates a slide bang shift. This is caused by the clutches etc going metal to metal. The burping of fluid out the over flow is either an over full trans or a over heating trans. Both very very bad. It is nice that GM did the recall so that when this happens the truck doesn't burn to the ground. The over heating trans is due to three basic causes. The tourque converter is released and the trans should be locked in a lower gear. The computor may or may not be programed to unlock the converter in overdrive to provide some extra rpm and power without doing a complete down shift. This produces enormous amounts of heat. Second the trans is being over stressed. Third the trans is damaged internaly and making extra heat. Service the trans and check the pan and oil for sparkly metal particles. Metal in the pan or oil is a disaster. Good Luck

Thanks Bubba, I'll check out the tranny to your recommendations. I CAN drive around all day(without towing) and the fluid temp never overheats. It DOES get hot towing up serious grades and then cools down to normal on the flats. I've had the vehicle for 10 years and have never found anything in the filter or fluid.
