Differential ratios Terry 6-19-07
In an effort to improve the miserable fuel economy of my 78 Dodge class C (440-1, Carter TQ 4bbl), I'd like to take the differential from its current 4.10 ratio to a 2.71 or 2.94.

My calculations say those should put the RPM in the low 2000's at 65 MPH.

Anyone have experience with taller ratios like that? Any problems to avoid?

Thanks much.

You're on the low end of the torque band engine-wise....Maybe 3.70 +/- ?

More importantly, it's not a zero-sum game....You'll be asking your torque converter to work more, with more slippage at lower rpm's, i.e.: higher & faster heat development in the TC and the fluids......

At the very least, I'd suggest adding a BIG (26 k GVW) tranny cooler with good airflow.....

Good Luck!
