My converted shcool bus broke down yesterday and I suspect that the transmission is siezed. The bus is a 71 Chevy C/50 school bus with a 350 V8. The current transmission is a 4 speed manual with a split rear end. At 60 mph the engine is turning at almost 4000 rpm. If I have to replace it I would like to put in a 5 speed or something geared higher. I am wondering if anyone has some advice on where I can find out what transmissions are available that could replace this one. Can I use any large truck transmission that will bolt up to my bellhousing? What should I be looking for to make this bus drive better on the highway?
My 4 speed hasn't gone out, but like you, I would like to bring my rpms down. I turn 3600 at 60. It doesn't run hot and holds about 60 lbs. oil pressure at that speed, but I figure if I can lower the revs I'll add life to the engine. Someone told me a 4 speed and 5 speed will swap out if the length of the output shaft is the same.
