I have a 4L60E transmission in my 94 silverado 1/2 ton 2wd it's got 263,000 miles on it. It won't shift past 2nd gear it just revs up after 2nd. It never slipped or anything I realize it a lot of miles, but I don't have the money to buy a rebuilt one and not entirely sure if I need one. I was told it was a shift solenoid I bought a 3-4 solenoid from a dealership but there are two and I wasn't sure which one to replace I called a mechanic who after looking through a book told me the one on the drivers side. I replaced it and nothing happened. Anyone who has any ideas please let me know.
ITS THE SPEED SENSOR! I SEEN TRANSMISSION CHANGED OVER THIS PROBLEM I DROVE AROUND THE BLOCK WITH NO SPEEDO AND GRABBED THE WIRES AND THEY BROKE IN TWO! GETS HOT BACK THERE! TWISTED THE WIRES TOGETHER AND IT QUIT! THIS IS THE #1 REASON FOR NOT GETTING PAST SECOND
I bought the same 94 Silverado truck with the same problem. I had the trans rebuilt by a Chevy mechanic. After installing the trans it shifted ok 3 or 4 times and went back to the same problem. I sent it back to the mechanic and he said I needed a new valve body. Same problem. Sent back third time SAME problem. Maybe I have an electrical issue with the wiring harness. I need help.
I have a 4L60E transmission in my 2000 Blazer 4x4. Replase transmission 10000 km ago(totaly burnd and planity gears cesed) Now it won't shift past 2nd gear it just revs up after 2nd. Electric work fine, tested and sift to 3 and 4, replase falve body stil same problem,My guest is the 3-4 clutch but the oil and pan is cleen "like new" Anyone who has any ideas please let me know.
My 4l60e have to go to 20mph before it shift out but once it goes past that i can drive it any where but i would like to know why it is not shifting to second gear
My 97 4x4 Tahoe had transfer case problems, (jumping out of reverse),I failed to properly diagnose the problem and overhauled the transmission before I replaced the synchronizers on the transfer case. After 600 miles of excellent performance the 4l60e transmission is not shifting to hi gear. I have replaced the tcc valve and wire harness, installed a trans co kit, both solenoids. I went back in it and check all the clutches. However I did not replaced the torque converter. A transmission specialist is telling me the the torque converter is the problem. I don't understand why he is saying this because the stall rpm is occurring at the right torque. I have ordered a trouble-shooting book to help me with the problem. It not a money issue I am a senior and have mechanic all my life. I will be going back into it until I get the problem fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have had this problem come to me alot on high milege vehicles basicly i can tell you this, cruise control can help you greatly with this problem if you can go to second gear set the cruse control and the engine does not just keep increasing in rpm then it is more likely to be a solonoid but if it does increase then it is more likely to be that the 3-4 clutch pack is out of your trans.
I have one with the exact same problem. So if you figure something out before I do please let me know. I will do the same if I figure it out. Thank you.
Probably your 3-4 clutch pack burnt.Is the fluid smell burnt? could be sol. try switching the two around to see if it changes shift to being a no 1to2problem.
I have a 1996 chevy z71 with the 4l60e tranny. i just rebuilt the tranny and hve only put about 30 miles on it since. from the start it has not shifted firmly only while up shifting. it down shifts fine and once in gear, wether it be 1 2 3 or 4 or reverse it works fine, it just has that slipping feel right when it tries to shift. i think its the shift solenoids,but not sure since i did not replace them. any input would be greatly appriciated
My '97 chevy blazer just started doing the same thing, won't shift past second. 3-4 days prior, for no obvious reason, a fuse blew in my truck that controlled the inside lighting. Do you think all this maybe related?
My 93 chevy s10 with a 4l60e wont shift past 2nd. I got it to shift into 3rd once or twice so its there. other wise it just slips. The speedo works fine so i dont think its the sensor. the fluid is fine.

I let the car cool down for a couple of days and got it out again. It worked fine for a couple of miles, until it got hot. The problem reappeard and, eventually, lost 1st gear for good.
I researched and decided to start with the shift solenoids (1-2, 2-3) and oil/filter change. The problem persisted, but now I have intermitent appearances of first gear again.
The guy who did the job says the old tranny oil wasn't so dirty for a 13 year old car and did not smell "too" burned.
My next step would be learning more about the speed sensor thing.
I have no problem with getting to the rebuilding/overhauling process to fix it "all", but I dread/fear this problem will persist even so.

Trans stopped shifting past second gear. set up for six months. I drove it about 60 miles and the first ten it worked fine then started acting up againv

My 1999 Yukon is also slipping. I tried driving in second in manual, about 30 mph, holding the rpm steady, and manually shifting into third. I could see the rpm drop slightly, that tells me it is shifting, but is slipping. Anyone know if thats a band
adjustment or what that might be? Fluid level is right and not bright pink, but doesn't look burnt. Had the filter replaced and flushed at 55K, now has 101k miles. No warning light also. Thanks will keep in touch. Hope this helps someone.
SAME BOAT. 94 GMC wont shift smooth after its hot. Its fine for the first five mins. but after it runs for a bit it, it wont shift. Whats kinda scary is it starts to make a funky sound and starts to smell.. I havent drove it since that hoping i saved the clutch plates.. Took it to aamco for a free est. and they quoted me 1600! They said it needed to be rebuilt. Im Gonna start with the wire harness from the dash to the tranny. If that dont work gonna replace silenoids and internal harness. And if that dont work whats the next step? Rebuild? Please Post. Gilkill..
I always have 2nd & reverse but lose 1st and 3rd shortly after I get down the road. My speedometer also goes haywire back and forth once I lose my gears.
I am a rebuilder for 35 yrs if you can't get past 2and gear it is usually the speed sensor or broken wires from the sensor. the sensor puts a signal from the sensor to a buffer behind the dash then to the computer to make it shift. the buffer can be bad too.4l60's 94 chevys were great for the buffer going bad

I have a 94 Camaro Z28 and it just started to not shift out of 2nd into 3rd....thanks for the tip on the speed sensor....that makes things a whole lot easier...
Similar problem but throttle position sensor shows zero no matter what position gas pedal in. tranny not shifting is intermittent, serviced and checked everything looked new. when it acts up will not shift till 4000 rpm. any ideas? thanks
