Late 93 early 94 C3500 6.5 turbo diesel. Will not downshift to first atomaticly or manually, starts in second shifts smooth to third will not upshift to fourth, will kick down in a passing situation. Symptom not affected by temp. change. A previous irratic shift problem was cured by a TPS replacement. tested TPS, system voltage in spec.6v to 4.0v at TPS connector. There are no malfunction indicators lit, but a trans shop told me the TPS was throwing codes. He did not tell me what those codes were. I have no other drivability or ABS issues. Is this a ECM/PCM, shift solenoid, or other internal trans issue? I should mention that there is 230K on the odo as far as I know the tranny is origional I don't know about maintenance, but, the previous owner was not known for taking care of his equipment.
Hey Chris, I read your message, this is what you need to do. First, pull dip stick and smell the trans fluid. If it smells burned the trans is toast. If it does not, then pull the pan, and drain and replace filter. Check for metal shavings. If there are any, then its time for a rebuild. It may be a shift solenoid but thats probably because the trans fluid is burned. It can be rebuilt to stock specs or it can be up graded to the 4L85E, used in RV's. Its heavy duty. Check at Hotrod.com, if you dont find it just email them they will help.
I found out that the trans had been replaced around 100k, and serviced once or twice since. It uses 2-3 Qts. every 2 mos. so the fluid is always checked. It's still good but could stand to be changed. there is no indication that the trans is junk ie: slipage, juttering, or noise. 2nd, 3rd, and reverse work great, hot or cold. Symptom is not affected by temp change. I did find that the 5amp crank circuit trough the fuse box is dead, no juice. The fuse was blown, new fuse still no juice. put the meter on it, no power to the fuse. could this be related? I read that the PCM uses a crank signal to read trans input RPM (engine speed) to calculate shift points and firmness.

I also have the same problem in a 1997 VT Commodore sedan, throwing error code 82: shift solenoid 1-2. I have replaced the solenoid and still same error. I've not done wiring tests yet, before i start testing harness wires is there any common reason for this? I'm thinking that the PCM may be faulty?
