Rear Differential Switch on School Bus Leon 8-1-05
Not sure if this is the right forum, but I believe the tranny is important in this situation, so I'll ask. I have a 1985 International School Bus (actually, Thomas made the bus, International made the engine), and I'm trying to get a straight answer about switching out the rear end so it will go faster than 45mph. Right now, the ratio in the differential is 6.50, we are probably going to move down to a 4.33. It seems quickest, easiest and least expensive to switch out the enitre 'hog head', rather than just the gears themselves. The transmission is an Allison 545, with 165 hp diesel engine. All that said, does anyone know what I'll get out of this process? Will all this money and effort only allow my bus to go 50 mph, or can I be hopeful enough for 65 mph? Anyone with any experience with this, please let me know!
