My Chevy S-10 is the biggest piece of junk I ever bought. It's a 1998 and you'd think I just bought it from the junk yard. My slave cylinder is gone. My driver's side door is hanging down and hard to shut: windshield wipers, clutch fan, electrical problems, plug wires gone in first year, u-joints, ball joints, starter all replaced. I might as well built my own truck. Fell apart before paid for, need to buy a new vehicle, very afraid.
I own 2000 Chevy s-10. Wont go into gear unless you pump it repeatedly. It squeaks, rattles, and the starter decided to go out with the clutch.I think i need a new slave cylinder and master cylinder. Does anyone know why they go out so early? It's having the mechanical equivalent of a nervous breakdown. IF YOU OWN ONE SELL IT TO SOMEONE YOU HATE!
Hi guys. I'm an ASE Master who's getting high blood pressure. Just got home after another slave cylinder blew out. S10 trucks are dangerous with inop. clutch as one cannot shift them at all--in or out of gear, with a bad slave. Worse going up steep grade, as I was. All this was after a replacement trans (65K with OEM GM slave) installed by me with a new Timken pilot bushing and Timken throwout bearing. The new trans was needed because the original pilot walked out of the engine, leaving the input unsupported with resulting damage. BTW, these things are not easy to work on. Do not hand one down to your kid!!!
Oh, yeah. S10 Blazers, 2 or 4WD, are also very complicated and problematic vehicles. Chronic niggling problems occur for no reason. Door bushings wear out prematurely. Car washing apparently flushes out the hinge lube (look at the bodyline), so oil hinges often. Pre-4 whl. disc Blazers have horrible brakes--same as in an El Camino but on a 500 pound heavier vehicle. Ign. switches fail. Oil leaks. Diff. noise. Rotors warp. Should GM finally go BK and be reorganized by the government?
Have problems with my 1998 S-10. No feel in clutch pedal. Master cylinder has black not clear fluid it. I drained the system and started bleeding it but bleeder valve broke off. I think I need a new slave cylinder and master cylinder. Common problem? 124,000 miles.
WOW!!! Someone must have beat the daylights out of that truck. Have a '95 with 190,000 and still going strong. Only usual wear items replaced. Starting to rust but it is 11 years old. If I could buy another just like it I would.
Dan, I agree with you. I will never buy another s-10 again. I bought a 2002 chevy s-10 just 2 years ago brand new. I bought it in 03, but it was brand new. Just sat on the lot for a year. Now, 2 years and 60,000 miles later...it is the biggest piece of junk ever. So far, I have had to replace: all 4 shock absorbers TWICE, differential cover gasket, pinion seal, 3rd door handle, tailgate cables, idler arm, and front wheel bearings. Currently, it is in the shop having alot of work done to it. It is getting new : clutch, throw-out bearing, slave cylinder, master cylinder, and tail-shaft. I haven't beat this truck to death, but I haven't babied it either. It is a truck, and I have used it as a truck. My next truck will be an F-250 for sure.
Ive had my 1999 for 7 years and its at 182,000 miles. JUST NOW having problems, namely the throwout bearing burning up. bad. now I need a new master cylinder to go along with all the parts (including slave cylinder) that got replaced, cuz this new clutch doesnt want to pull completely away from the flywheel! it was a bitch to drive for a while. Really tho, the truck's been to good to me over nearly a decade for me to give up on it. It'll end up eating more of my cash I'm sure, but it's MY truck! I consider it a member of the family, and I'd let it sleep inside if I had a bigger front door! If your truck gives you hell, regardless of brand or model, then it's called BAD LUCK, and you cant say all of them suck. its probably just yours.
I have a 96 Chevy s10 with 152,000 miles. i have owned it for about 4 years. the truck has given me little no problems. Every one knows that S/T trucks are known for balls joints and door pins. I have done the head gasket on mine because the 2.2L 4cyl is also known for that. My truck has been very reliable. i have no complaints. this truck has lots of suspension mods and gets given pretty hard on daily, and it still holds up. If any one is selling s10 parts im looking for a 6 foot bed and other body parts. thanks
Ford never seems to change their Ranger truck. i wonder why? because its a good truck. The last time a new one came out was in 1993. Mine is a 1998 and its got 160,000 miles on it. ive never done anything except belts, plugs, wires, distributor cap, fuel filter, change the oil, batteries, and flush the coolant.
it still runs just like the day i bought it and the best part of all is that i am thinking about trading it in soon and i can still go and buy the same identical truck today in 2008, that theyve had since 1993 to work the kinks and problems out of.
I have a 92 S 10. Replaced the clutch assembly and bought a new slave cyclinder but cannot get a pedal. Bled it 'til I was certain it was pure fluid and still no pedal. Squeezed the clutch arm by using multigrips against the housing and the clutch workes fine. Cant see any fluid leaks. I'm loath to replace the clutch master as it is in a rediculous place. It is dry outside so probably okay anyway. I would appreciate any advice in this and tend to agree that the quality all round is poor. As for the design of the clutch pedal it seems almost an after thought.
I agree about this truck being a piece of JUNK! I bought my 2000 S-10 in May of 2006 and it had 98,000 and booked for aroud $5000 and I have already put $3000 in it and it's in the shop AGAIN! Three months after buying it I had to get breaks and now I already need new ones and they have never been right. It still pulls to the right severly. I had the right front ball joint go out while driving at 100000 miles and had to replace both front ball joints and the idler arm. The factory CD player and the intermitant wiper switch have quit. Then the best part....I had to rebuild the whole damn motor at 120,000 miles because I had no oil pressure at all. Now, this time a week after puting on a new starter the deflector plate motor that shifts the direction of where the AC air comes out went out and worse, the damn thing began to rattle badly and backfire when starting and yesterday while driving it lost all acceleration. The motor would run but it wouldn't go when I gave it gas. When I killed the motor to look at it, it wouldn't start back and made the same sound as when the starter went out. This is the biggest piece of shit I have ever owned. I will never buy another American vehicle....EVER! If it is something major to fix I will be on my way to buy a Toyota or Nissan.
I have a 2002 s-10 2.2 flex with over 287,500 miles. Same engine, same water pump, same starter,ect... the list goes on. And it still runs great!!! Have replaced the clutch now 3 times, replaced alt at 240,000, replaced fuel pump at around 75,000 but still running replacement. Tuned up every 100,000, replaced front wheel bearings 1st at around 150,000 and just now at 287,000 just for my own security...were still good. NEVER REPLACED THE FUEL FILTER JUST TO PROOVE A POINT!!! Changed oil every 3 to 4,000 miles!!! Just replaced calipers and bleed system/flushed at 275,000...realy did'nt need it. U-joints one time. Oh yeh, I work the living hell out of this truck and have owned 4. I hall very heavy loads plus always carry 300-400lbs of tools and equipment at all times. I forgot, i did change filters and lights once or twice. :)= (If you maintainance your truck and reg check for leaks, ect. you will have no trouble with this truck. And it is really easy to work on...unless your slow or something). S-10 #1 by far.
I have a 2000 chevy s-10 2.2L at 88k miles and im running just fine, dropped 4 inch front and 3 inch back. I run the hell outta the truck and have owned it for a while, yall apparently are either driving it straight into a wall or buryin it in sand. Try taking care of it, that might help
Am I the only one that hasn't had any major problems with my S-10? I had to replace a starter at 90,000 and one U-joint at 120,000 miles, and every spring I have to put a can or two of freon in, but that's it. My truck is a 95 2.2L regular cab with a lift kit at 30" tires. Otherwise it's completely stock.
Well to each there own. Nothing will last forever. How you service it will be a factor on how much trouble it gives you. I have owned 3 s-10 trucks. I have a 96 with 160,000 miles on it that has gave me very little problems. yes the wiper motor, and fuel pump had recalles on them. but other than that trouble free. I tore the truck down for a total makeover and in the final days of putting it back on the road. If you off roading or draging the bottom out of it. It is going to break stuff. Get used to it or go buy a hummer, tank or a road grader. Can anyone name one truck that when abused or not serviced on time is trouble free? Wear is part of the design so everyone will have to buy something else at some point. I know the s-10 was around 20 years. If it was 100% junk it would have not been. So quit bushing it and just sell it if your not happy with it. defender of the Chevy s10
I recently changed my clutch, bled the system, resurfaced my flywheel, and change the rear seal on the motor. Gues what??? my slave cylinder is now going out, and now have to take apart the entire clutch to replace that. I beat the crap out of the truck and probably should not complain, but after hearing everyone else say that they are on their second slave cylinder, I am thinking about leaving the one in their and driving to a dealership and just getting a new car.
I own a 2000 Chevy S-10. I had to replace my first Slave Cylinder and Clutch master Cylinder at 43,000 miles. Now two years and 35,000 miles later I'm already on number 2. What a joke!
I bought my 96 S-10 new and have been the only driver for 12 years. i am now needing to replace the slave cylinder after 175,000 miles. I say that has been a good run for the part I am replacing. If your slave cylinder or anything associated with the clutch assembly craps out on you regularly, I would suggest learning to be efficient with your clutch. Most people I have seen that drive standard transmissions drive in a way that would tear up any clutch. Quit complaining so much and post something useful.
