4L80E shifting problems James Radlinski 2-17-05
I have a 1993 C2500, 6.5L turbo Diesel. The first symptom was ever now and then when the tranny would downshift to pass on the freeway it wouldn't go back to O/D. But after turning the motor off and sitting for awhile, it'd be back to normal. Now my problem is that The tranny upshifts from 1st to 2nd to 3rd very quickly and it doesn't go into 4th (O/D). When I checked for fualt codes, it gives me a number 22 code (throttle position senser-low voltage). I replaced the sensor and the problem still exsists. I also serviced the tranny. The fuild was slightly dirt, but wasn't burned and there was no metal in the pan. Thank you for the help in advance.

2004 Winnebago Brave with 8.1 L Vortec and 4L80E tranny. I pull a 2002 Dodge Dakota 4wd with camper shell. Entire coach vibrates for a second or two just prior to tranny shifting from overdrive to 3rd gear when engine is under load. As soon as the shift to 3rd occurs the vibration ceases and the coach runs smoothly. Any guesses as to what is causing the problem???

I have the same truck and the same problem. I took my truck to a tranny guy. My reverse was gone also. He told, and showed me my tranny was shot. I just replaced my transmission with one from phoenix transmissions. Belive it or not I've got the same problem. I've heard this is a real big problem with our trucks. Let me know how your problem turns out. I'm getting my truck looked at on Monday morning. If you email me I'll reply with the results of my truck test.

Re: 4L80E shifting problems James Radlinski 3-23-05
It turns out that the problem was the TPS (throttle posistion senser). It was failing very slowly and eraticly. When I did replace it the first time, it was outa adjust and the plug was old and loose, so the problem still exsisted.
I found out that not only will the TPS cause these symptoms but also the VSS (vehicle speed senser). Of course this is for a tranny not shifting correctly but is machaniclly sound.

I hate tranny shops sometimes; their solution is to always rebuild or replace, never diagnose the real problem.

I have similar problem. I lost rev and overdrive. Drove the truck about 70 miles, all the sudden overdrive was back. Pulled over and rev was there to. Kept OD and rev for about 40 miles and lost it again. If anyone can give me some help on this one, I would sure appreciate it.

My4l80e drove on the highway in od never locked up. in 10 miles it went out off gear altogether, stoped, drove off in a minute drove home in a lower gear maby 3 rd. when the throtle was lifted it freewheeled. with the throtle down i got it home. anny ideas ?i think reverse worked.
Re: 4L80E shifting problems Rick 8-16-06
I have a 4L80E, hard shift in 1-2, and now it has lost reverse. I supsect the direct clutch, or forward clutch or 2nd clutch, depending what book I look into has busted, or cooked. I had it apart 30 k ago, it had the same 1-2 hard shift, and stuck some check balls in the vave body plate, and blew some through the plate, and had a cracked conical clutch plate in the afformentioned clutch. I am sorry I cannot tell exactly what clutch it was I replaced, it has been about 5 years or more. Anyway, before I take it apart, can you direct me to tech service bulletins, or possibly tell me what your experiance has been with this problem? I am thinking in the lines of a new wiring harness inside the trans, all new solenoids and electronics, and is there any wisdom in a new valve body? Is there a new and improved valve body? Could it be the drac or drivetrain puter? I have replaced the tp sensor, no change. As I have mentioned, now it is no reverse, or barerly any, better when cold, but it has to come apart, and I am afraid of trading it in on a rblt, as it shows no signs of wear, just its malfunction, and there must be a solution to it. Please write back and be as technical as you can, as I am anything but braindead, LOL. Rick
Re: 4L80E No rev, slippind 2nd Brab 7-19-05

Re: 4L80E shifting problems Rich 9-11-06
Hey guys I have a 92 K2500 4x4 with the 4l80e.. Upon driving one day 2nd gear just quit working. When i take off i have to get up to about 25-30mph and let off the gas or itll just ride 1st till no end. If i let off itll shit right into 3rd and then 3rd shifts fine into 4th.

I took it into a shop and they told me i need a new trans, but i have been driving it like this for a long time and nothing else has happened.

What do you guys think to check first i feel it is goin to be something stupid.

Any info please email me at topgunnyfz450@msn.com
Re: 4L80E shifting problems Ron 7-8-06
I had a leaky transmission pan. Changed filter, fluid. Drove it was going great stopped on a hill backed down the hill reversed worked fine, but shifted now no forward gears or motion.
Could this be the forward motion, drive solnoid.
Re: 4L80E shifting problems Joe 8-28-06
Referance to A 1993 4x4 6.5 liter turbo diesel 4L80E transmission. It reves fine but it wont shift into overdrive and it will somtimes jerk hard pop and make noise as such. It also has to be reved to get it to start moving forward or reverse. SOmetimes it shifts fine and then it just goes to acting up all of a sudden. The reving to get it to move is pretty frequent until you get it moving and it seems to shift finr but not into overdrive. I replaced everything i can think of can you help me.....
Re: 4L80E shifting problems Lomer 4-22-06
Rebuilt my tranny. put it in missing one sensor on the back of tranny. No reverse. Do not remember even taking the sensor off the back of tranny can someone tell me if this plug is used or if it extra? there is place for 8 hook ups I can only find 7 from the harness. thank you.
Re: 4L80E shifting problems JOHN 7-28-05
I HAVE A 91 3/4 PU WITH THE 4L80E AND I ALSO HAVE LOST REVERSE. WHEN I SHIFT FROM N TO R OR D TO R, IT FEELS LIKE IT STARTS IN REVERSE, BUT WHEN I PRESS THE GAS, NOTHING. EVERYTHING ELSE IS OK. I ALSO FOUND THAT I CAN NOT REPLACE IT WITH A SPARE 700-R I HAVE BECAUSE OF THE COMPUTER, EVEN THOUGH I CAN DO THE HARDWARE PART OF THE WORK.
Re: 4L80E shifting problems Michael 8-20-05
I had my 4L80E fixed a month ago.85,000 Miles on it.The guy who fixed it works for a GMC dealer,Trans Technician.

I have a 454 2500 'K' (4 WD)1993 Pickup.This guy does work 'on the side'.

As truck warms up (2-4 miles)it won't shift into 3rd.He changed the 1-2 and 2-3 solenoids, they were original.New ones have a better design.Dropped pan, filter was clean.

I got it back and same thing. It was in "Limp home" mode- 2nd gear.He was embarassed, got out his snap-on scanner,up and down his country driveway.

Bad PCM (Power Train Control Module),cylinder head temp sensor(NOT the guage one,but he replaced that,too);jury-rigged,burnt wiring draped over intake, a couple of bad connectors;and speed sensor in trans.

Runs like a fine watch now.Cost about $750 total.

Re: 4L80E shifting problems Herb 3-15-05
My trans. won't go into 4th. When I stop it stays in 2nd. I'm wondering what the trans. guy told you about yours?
Re: 4L80E shifting problems Kevin Gilbert 5-27-05
What did it end up to be with your truck? I have a similar problem. I lost reverse and overdrive. Kept driving it, got both back for about 50 miles and lost it again.
Re: 4L80E shifting problems ISAAC 1-9-07
YOU SHOULD CHECK OUT YOUR EPC SOLENOID ITS THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL SOLENOID IF ITS READING TOO HIGH OR TOO LOW THEN YOU WITH AVE THAT PROBLEM
Re: 4L80E shifting problems James 4-12-05
Be sure the TPS is adjusted properly. Then check all connectors. Check for looseness and stuff inside the connections. A very small piece of dirt will cause a bad connection.
Re: 4L80E shifting problems boone williams 5-3-05
There are several things that can cause the no rev and drive in neutral, the valvebody behind the manualvalve there is a filter if its broken or leaking rev fluid will exhaust and could cause forward clutch engagment in neutral
the rev servo or band strut could be broken or low/rev rollerclutch could be binding or over-running
Re: 4L80E shifting problems ruben 7-27-05
There are a lots of problems with these transmissions.
change the tps next to the carb.
change the gas filter,
and change the sensors there are 2 and somentimes the sensor is defective and can't even change gears change both one reads the rpms and if this is not reading the rpms is not going to ork properly and the last thing you have to do is drain the trans fluid and buy 2 cans of trans flash discconect the two pipes comming from the cooler radiator that ataches to the trans and flash one sidfe then the other side...good luck..
Re: 4L80E No rev, slippind 2nd James 6-25-06
Brad: My brother just had about the same thing happen to his 4L80E. He changed the fluid and filter yesterday and drove it about 300 miles. He hooked to my Suburban back into the garage. His Suburban pulled forward and then reverse quit working. Did you find anything out with yours? We didn't drive it so I don't know if it slips in 2nd gear.
Let me know something. Thanks Jamie
