I own a 1999 Chevy Trailblazer. Everything was fine last night when I parked the truck. This morning when I went out, the truck starts fine, but I can't put it into gear. The shift lever is in the center console and you must have the brake on and push in a release button. The brake is on, but the release button is locked. Before I have this owed to the shop and spend a bazillion dollars, does anyone have a suggestion?
My son wanted to replace his shifter knob with a light up neon one, but we can't get it to come off. It looks like the harder you try to turn it off that it might turn the entire thing even from the floor.can this be done? or does the whole thing have to be replaced?
Thank you for your time.
Julie: It sounds like your ignition switch might be starting to fail. This is not the lock cylinder, which is separate. There are a lot of circuits controlled by this switch that can fail all at once or in random order. Some fault codes can be set in the ECM computer. The 1997 Silverados and Blazers were known for this. Yours might be a wear issue. As always, check your dealer for TSBs and inspect ALL your fuses, including the underhood fuse center....
Hi Kim: The knob doesn't actually come off. Peel back the rubber boot at the bottom of the shifter to access and loosen a large jam nut that locks the entire lever and knob to the transmission shifter assembly. This still will not get the knob changed, but you will know why it won't loosen!
