NEED TO GHANGE OUTPUT SHAFT SLEEVE MIKE WILSON 3-2-04
Sir
This might sound like a stupid question but I need help and I need it fast!! As of now I have a truck and a car both broken down and no way to get back and forth to work for my wife and myself. The problem with the truck is not that bad, but the one with my car is giving me fits!! It is a 1996 Pontiac sunfire, it has a 4T440E transmission, 4 Speed automatic. It started leaking transmission fluid out of the left output shaft seal. When I tore it down to change the seal, the spring that is in the seal has somehow came out of the seal and gouged the output shaft sleeve badly. The output shaft sleeve needs changed. I have the new sleeve and the new seal, putting the seal in is not a problem, but changing the sleeve is. I know that the sleeve has to be slid off the back side of the output shaft since it will not come off from the front. I need help, can you tell me how to pull the output shaft out of the transmission so that I can change the sleeve. I was told from a local transmission shop that the output shaft should come right out with a slight tap of a hammer and chisel but it appears to be hitting something dead solid and will not come out of the transmission. I worked on this shaft for the last 3 nights trying to get this shaft out so I can change this sleeve. A 30.00 part is starting to get very frustrating. It should have only taken a few hours, but like i said, i have way more than that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time
Mike

Find the snap rings on the end of the shaft. remove them and slide the shaft out.
