P-30 454 400 ? tranie Larry Wilson 7-12-03
Ive got a crack in the bellhousing, from the starter side, almost to the top of bellhousing. I think the crack started last year, after I noticed a vibration. I took it easy for 5 hr to get it home. The vibration stopped when I got back on the road. I tryed to start it this year, the starter nose was broken. I replaced it with 1/8 in shorter nose, turns out the 1st starter was touching the bell housing.the 2nd starter is the correct one for 1976 454 p-30. Im not sure if a vibration in the drive line caused the crack, or starter. Ive never seen a cracked bellhousing before. Im wondering if I can just brase the crack closed,or find what caused it 1st. would realy appreciate any help, maby someone has seen this problem. thanks much...

Check that dowels are in block to the bellhousing.check that all bellhousing bolts are tight.check rear mount on trans.check center bearing support on driveshaft.cracks in housing can normally be aluminum welded.

If it's not the overdrive tranny, then yes it's the 400 thm. The alignment on any transmission is critical. Since you have to have the tranny out anyway, I would just source another case (100 bucks) and have a shop rebuild the tranny. Since this is a rv, peace of mind goes a long way. It was probably cracked from previous broken u-joint, and then shaft flying around. I've seen it a few times.
