Wanting to swap a 87 Aerostar floor shift transmission into a 92 Aerostar column shift. The 87 floor shift has a speedo connection into the tail shaft and the 92 column did not. (1) Does the tail shaft need to be change? or can the gear just be left inside and no cable? (2) the shift lever on the side of the transmission needs to be changed small ball vs. large ball on lever. How does this exchange.
Thanks
Cam
The 1992 has an electronic speedometer driven by the Antilock Brake System via a sensor on the top front of the rear axle, so you don't need the speedo cable on the old transmission. Should be no need to change tailshaft only to get rid of the cable drive. The 1992 trans had electronic control features, not sure about your earlier year. I can't help with any of the other compatibility or adapting issues. God Bless, jd

Thanks, we have changed the tail shaft and shifter lever, a few hurdles but completed. You are correct about the electronic control features. The 92 has two, which I assume are solenoids the 87 has one. Can these be (1)left unconnected or (2)switch (splice)the electrical connecter over and leaving the pink wire off (cut)so that it is wired to the one (orange wire). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Cam
