I have a 78 sportscoach on a m600 chassis and the transmission has started to slip it has a 440 engine, I hav found a transmission that was just rebuilt out of a 72 executive with a 413, I was told all I would have to do is switch the torque converter because the 413 is internally balanced and the 440-3 is externally balanced, does that sound correct the transmissions look exactly alike. thanks for any info. Jim
The transmissions are probably "727"s and likely will look alike. There's a chance the output splines could be different, so watch the driveshaft connection. A speed shop may have a balance weight kit and instructions how to install it. I went through this with a Dodge van. Took internally balanced 318 engine out and installed externally balanced 360. 360 was furnished with a torque converter which I used. Problem was, converter turned out to not be for a heavy vehicle. Had too much slippage built into it, ran hot all the time, and I burned out the transmission before I understood what was wrong. Welding the weight to your current TC looks more attractive for that reason. However, you need to evaluate the transmission failure. If the failure spread debris into the converter you don't dare re-use it. Would suggest a rebuilt TC instead, but beware of its stall specs so you don't get into what happened to me. If it doesn't work all at once, just go to the ".com" then Forums then Transmission. God Bless, jd

I dont know if anybody answered your question, but the older big block mopars used a steel crank and they were balanced by itself. after 73 or 74 they started to use cast crankshafts, in which there is a little weight on the converter to balance out the mass. if you had an old converter you could simply cut off the weight and its done, but if you had a converter w/o a weight you would have to get a new one or get a weight kit for it have it balanced and weld on the weight.
