85 Executive 454 needs new transmission Gregg Koefer 2-19-03
My buddy has a 36' 1985 Executive motorhome on a Gillig chassis. This unit has a Chevrolet 454 engine, but needs a new tranny. We found one at a local salvage yard out of a 1988 4 x2 Chevy C-30 truck (TH400 transmission) for $225.00. Anyone know if this will fit his rig?

Thanks, Gregg

Gregg,
I am a new RV'r but old time streetrodder. The Turbo 400's from Chevy's are basically the same. Some may have different length tailshafts. Check that, other than that it should work. If you are going to the trouble to do the work yourselves, you might just want to have the original rebuilt. Many shops will do 350/400 trannys pretty cheap. If you do, ask for the heavy duty clutches and a mild shift kit. A new converter is a must in either case. Also, if you use the junkyard tranny go ahead an put new seals in front and rear while it is out and change the filter. Hope this helps.

Greg, Rather than respond like I did to you by E-mail, I'd rather respond to you on this board as it may help others, like you referring an earlier post that I made...you see? Thanks, Joe

You might want to check and make sure its a th400 in it. The executive had an option for an allison trany, which is a better trany and it would get you alot farther than a th400.
