I have a question and hope some one with experience can help. My story is I have a 1999 Caravan with 40,000 Miles. I bought an extended warranty to cover problems. Going home the pins went threw the transmission casing. I had it toed in thinking it would be fixed. It came back as non warrantable because they blamed it on spinnning tires.I was driving and not spinning but want to know what they mean. Thanks
This transaxle problem happened to us the other day....you are so right this should not happen....It was on a 1996 caravan 3 speed....not impressed...to say the least....how do I get hold of dodge to fight this....
It would help if you could post just what section of the transaxle failed. If it were the differential portion, then it could have failed if one front driving wheel had lost traction and started spinning for a sufficient length of time. These extended "warranties" are really just insurance policies covering only certain components and conditions under which they fail.I would ask for a second opinion on the transmission failure.
You are not alone. I have seen 2001 Caravan's with the same problem as yours and the same answer you got. My suggestion to you is contact the BBB Auto Line in Washington, DC. Keep good records as to every detail involved. Names, dates, any costs you incurred, answers you got from the dealer, everything as accurately as you can. The BBB will mail or fax you some forms to fill out. Mail or fax them back as soon as you can. They will assign a case worker to you within a few days. The case worker will contact Chrysler Corporation and they have a very short time to respond to them or you. Only a few days if I remember correctly. The case worker will try to work it out, but if it can't be resolved it will go to a mediator. It usually gets resolved before that. I have helped several people through this process with 100 percent success.
This is a pretty commom problem, much more so than it should be. The dealer has much knowledge about the condition. It is usually caused by spinning one wheel overspeed of the other and it locks the spidergears and sends the differential pins thru the case. If you live in a snow region they will win about it being not covered but you can give them an honest fight. Differentials just are not suppose to be built so lite that they fail this way.
Very good advice Joe, but he is not dealing with ChryCo, but rather the underwriter of his insurance policy, ie, "extended warranty". At 40 K the factory warranty would not be in force. As I recall, ChryCo used to have a 70,000 mile driveline warranty with a $100 deductible-----we had a lot of Dakota auto trannys repaired through this---but I think the standard warranty was on the '99, and is now, 36mo/36,000 miles, does say something about the product, doesn't it?
