With my recently purchased 1996 32' Sunsport with a 460 Ford Superduty chassis I notice that the Steer Gear (which is located directly underneath the driver's feet to be extreamly noisey only when hot. I have to drive at highway speeds for at least an hour to hear this. The sound happens only when slowing down to turn a corner while turning right (quiet tuning left). The harder the turn is, the noisier it is. The "noise" sounds almost like if one had worn down brakes and had metal to metal contact between a pad and rotor. The same sound is present upon appying the brakes (This unit is also the brake booster for the power brakes) but again only when it is hot.. When the unit is cold there is no noise and is never present hot or cold when turning left. When cold it is quiet applying the brakes. Do I have contaminated fluid and/or air in the power steering system??

The steering box doesn't make noise, the hydro boost pump will though. It sounds like you have multiple problems with the whine in the drive train and the steering and brake problem. I think it would be in your best interest to find a good shop and have your motorhome thoroughly checked out. It could have many more miles than show on the odometer, or could have been in a serious accident. A motorhome with such low miles shouldn't be giving you these symptoms.

Thanks Joe, I am pretty sure that the motorhome's miliage is legit as the rest of the RV is like new. Also it is a digital odometer so not that easy to tamper with. I have been told that the transmission whine is normal. As for the hydro boost pump - do you know if improper fluid could do this? When toping off the resevoir before my recent trip I accidentaly but approx 1/2 pt of brake fluid in before catching myself! There is a lable on it saying "do not use brake fluid". I did not think that the little that I put in could have done this.........but?

Have you ever heard the expression "oil and vinegar don't mix?", Well brake fluid and nothing mix. Brake fluid will destroy seals, as well as it isn't a lubricant. You need a serious flush job. And then hope for the best.
