|Transmission wont shift into overdrive and screams when accelerating||Dave||1-29-15|
|Hello, we have a 33' 1989 Southwind. 454 bb. Recent problem with shifting to OD. It is having issues making OD lately. Rv has 76k miles and great maintenance past. It will slan the range of gears no problem, except OD. It will rev the rpms but fails to shift, when trying to gas it in to OD the rig makes a very loud scream until i let off the gas (kinda like my wife), but wont shift. Sounds like a belt slipping to me. But the manual states this is due to variable fan speeds and is normal to here that. I have checked all fluids, having trouble locating the tranny fluid access point. If I could get a pointer to the fill point i plan to replace the fluid and filter. Im not sure of the tranny other than its an automatic and the the rig is a 454 BB. |
Im sure the belt is an issue and plan to replace that along with the filter and trannny fluid. Any thoughts? Many thanks, happy Roaming. :)

|When you lie under the Transmission you should find the dipstick tube at a front corner of the case above the Trans oil pan. Follow it upwards with a flash light. Most likely it will have the dipstick handle at the Passenger side rear valve cover on the engine. |
I am going to make several predictions:
When you remove the transmission oil pan to change the oil you will find your 4L80 or 4E80 transmission has all sorts of tiny sparkly shavings in the oil and in amoungst the black silt inside the oil pan.
The magnet inside the oilpan will be heavily coated in black metal silt.
The belt is not the problem, excessive shift RPM is causing the fan to Howel.
An oil change will not fix the the Transmission, but it might get it to shift properly for a few hundred miles until what ever metal part that is worn out actually breaks.
Last prediction: It needs a Transmission rebuild to the tune of $3500.00 to $4500.00
