Help..Transmission problem on RV in Scotland UK..running GM 4L85E wont engage 3/4 Jonny 12-12-11
Hi, Im currently trying to figure out a problem with a 1996 fleetwood flair 6.5 diesel running a GM 4L80E or 85E transmission.... the vehicle will run fine in 1st, 2nd and reverse but wont engage top gears. Im planning on purchasing this vehicle as it is in good condition and at the right price but could do with some information on the gearbox, how many gears it should have and what the problem could be. from what I can gather it used to slip in top and now wont engage 3rd/4th... any help greatly appreciated

Jonny

This transmission is a four speed with locking torque converter.
Fourth is overdrive.
It is exstensivly computer controlled.
The only real way to figure out whats happening is have a scanner hooked up that can see what the computer is seeibng and what it is telling the transmission to do.
I am going to bet that as in many of these the converter failed to lock correctly and overheated and damaged the rest of the transmission.
It should have set a "code" and gone into limp mode when this happened.
Good Luck
