1994 Chevy Cheyenne Auto Transmission Jon C 9-24-10
I have a '94 chevy pickup with 4.3L engine and auto. transmission. It has 232,000 miles and now the tranny seems to be shifting hard. The problem is it isn't all the time. The engine seems revved up at higher than normal RPM's at a stop and when I take off and it shifts from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd it will almost throw your head into the back window. Putting it in park and then back into drive will do almost the same thing.
After driving it a while the idle is very high. I thought it was a stuck choke, but after cleaning it did the same thing.
I don't know which transmission is on the truck and don't know how to tell. This has been such a good truck, I hate to have to get rid of it because of this kind of problem. Any solutions?

High Idle and rough run are tune trouble, a sensor, wires, plugs and so on.
Probably try getting it scanned to start with.
The trans acting up as you describe could be it is need of a oil change and flush or one of the clutches is worn down to metal and causing the symptoms. The way to find out is to remove the oil pan and inspect the sediment in the bottom. Tiny Silver sparkly flakes is very bad.
Good Luck

I've almost gotten the engine to quit revving so high. It was a combination of the IAC being broken and the MAP sensor having the clip broken, which allowed it to work loose. Pity you have to cover what the mechanics do to make sure they DO their JOB when you pay so damn much for their WORK.
The tranny is still hammering into gear. I'll have to check the oil and filter next.
