1966 GMC Buffalo Bus Angela 11-12-09
Hello there, I have just purchased a 1966 GMC buffalo bus with a 871 Detroit Diesel and a 4 spd manual transmission. I can't find reverse! I don't know if it has gone out or if there is a different shift pattern. Does anyone have any info?

Check what position the switch for rear engine control is set to in the engine compartment.

Look for a switch on the dash marked solenoid shift or reverse or something of that nature. It will be where your left hand can operate it easily. With the main power on place the trans into first, turn and hold the switch in the on position and pull the shifter into second, not fast but not slow, you will hear a clunk from the rear and it has changed the shifter to the reverse gate. Let go of the switch. When you go back to first it returns to normal (for this type shifter) operation. This trans is probably the hardest bus trans to shift so once you have mastered this you will be able to pick up any type shifter pretty easy. If you look at the shift linkage on top of the trans there will be a large solenoid bolted to the trans near the shift linkage. That's where to look for most problems with this system. Good Luck and have fun
