If it has an air brake system, an air brake endorsement is required. Any CDL is state issued, but all follow federal guidelines which are very specific as to which one you need. A phone call to your local DMV should handle it. If you doubt their intelligence, just stop by a licensing office and pick up a CDL booklet (usually free), and it will spell it out for you. As to states getting touchy about what folks are hauling, I've been hearing about problems with ports of entry, weigh stations etc getting picky about folks with one ton pickups pulling goosenecks for hire doing hot shot work without a DOT number and carrier authority.
