Allison Trans problem by charles

I have a 1976 Flxible city transit type with auto trans. I just cranked it up and it goes into neutral and forward fine but won't go into reverse, the light on the dash switch doesn't light up in reverse either. Any ideas, I just replaced the batteries, the old ones wouldn't hold a charge.I live in Florida and hurricane Ivan is on the way, and I need to move it but can't without reverse.
