Looks like I have some serious work to do on my 8V71 in my 1971 Eagle... I'm considering changing out the engine completely for a Cummins... any advice? I've only had the bus a very short while but from what I can see the DD 8V71 seems a bit tempermental... am I off base?
If you mean they drip oil on the ground, smoke a lot on acceleration, run hot, and are not as fuel efficient as a 4-cycle engine, yes they are tempermental.
On the other hand, unlike a Cummins, you can never melt down the pistons because you pulled a hill too long in too high a gear.
My 2-cycle DD's start very easily, even if they have been sitting for weeks and weeks and the temperature is below 40 degrees.
I keep them full of good 40W oil, keep the water level up where it is supposed to be with the proper pH, and keep the fuel fresh. So far, they are not what I would call tempermental.
Changing the 2-cycle DD out of an Eagle can be done. In fact, with enough money you can do just about anything if you want to. The question comes down to, "What are you trying to accomplish?"
Changing the 8V-71 out for an 8V-92T would be a fairly easy swap but you would still have a 2-cycle DD.
Changing the 8V-71 out for a DD Series 50/60 or a Cummins 350/400 BCIII can be done but you are looking at upwards of $10-15K to have the job done.
Your 8V71 is probiey an old 318 I would not recomend you go with a 50 series engine. You also would not be happy with a cumming engine for several reasons in this bus. I Can supply you with a complete 71T, a 92T MUI or DDEC in several h.p ranges. A 60 series or a cummings engine if that's what you want.
You can find us on the web at www.cctskit.com All of our engines come wit a full one year warranty and the two strokes meet all E.P.A. emission standards. you should also see a small fuel saveings as well as an increase in power.
