I have a 6v-92 motor in my 1958 gmc bus wwhich is converted to rv.I bought a engine kit out of a metro bus line in LA,had in shoe fitted in complete with a allison automatic,this was graet for the first 30 miles,then it quit. motor junk. I buy another kit and have the engine totally rebuilt and reinstalled by a detriot shop in Yuma az,TRAVEL 5-6,000 MILES, WATER IN OIL,this is bad,rebuild motor again,3,000 miles,water in oil,checked oil cooler,replaced seals and sent on my way.500 miles later engine is heating again. gets rebuilt agaqin in phoenix, now here I am 3500 miles later with water in oil. today,a mechanic says he believes the block is cracked. My question is,should I get a used engine and start over,or, get a block and transfer parts,since they are new,this a reverse rotating engine so they seem difficult to find. thanks in advance for any ideas other than burning it to the ground

Steve there are several reasons a 92 will leak water You need to drop the pan and pressure the cooling syatem. look at the bottom of the liners for any water. this is the most commin probulem after over heating. we can fix it for you or put in contact with a good shop that can do the job for you. You should not be having probulems unless you have a bad engine or a cooling system in need of repairs. Has you mechanic pressure tested your cooling system while the pan is off to see if you are dumping coolent into the pan form the block?
Water in oil	Paul	1-18-03
Water in the oil could be caused by a leaking injector tube. I am not familiar with the 92 series but this used to happen on the 71 series. If your engine has these tubes pressure test the cooling system with the valve covers removed and if there is a tube leaking you will see water leaking at one of the injectors. This in itself will not cause it to overheat unless the coolant level gets too low.

As a RTS technician I would recomend finding a hop which is a Detroit Dealer. As for your perticular problem if I were in your shoes I would purchase a reliabuilt 6V-92 from that dealer or seek your closest Stewart and stevenson but it certainly does sound that your block is cracked.

Another alternative for a used engine is to call Atlantic detroit diesel in New jersey. They are selling retrofit 6v92 for $1500 each. I bought one looking for a good block and ended w/ epa rebuild engine w/ 4000 hrs on it that was built in 2000. Interior of engine was brand new when we removed the pan. We odered three more from there.All were epa upgrade engines built in 99 that were the same way.
