RTS oil pressure advice, please Goaticus 11-25-01
Hi,
I am considering a GMC RTS w/8v71 DD. It runs great, no smoke, (even after engine load), oil pressure good when running. However, oil pressure seems pretty low at idle, reading is only a couple of pounds. Just revving the engine by hand brings the pressure up nicely. Do I have a good reason to be concerned?

That is normal, it gets as low as 5-6 lbs hot at idle. You shoud have 55-60# while running at top end

The old 2 cycle Detroit engines ran a direct drive for the oil pump. This directly affected the amount of oil pressure at different RPM's. The big problems that a lot of DD's had was leakage. We used to say that we'd put a pan under them at night and pour the oil back in in the morning. If the engine has any age on the overhaul at all, put a big catch pan under it when you park for any length of time.
