To All,

I'm looking @ 2 different Eagle's
*One 1982 with a DD 6V92 Turbo charged engine, 740 Allison Auto Trans.
*The other a 1983 with a 8V92 engine,
Auto Trans.

My question Which is the overall better more reliable engine? and the spec. difference between them both? Which should I lean toward?
Help me someone ?
Re: Detroit Engines aka 6.5litre Neil Miller 4-29-04
Hi. I am thinking of buying a 1998 29 passenger bus. It is powered with a 6.5 diesel engine. My question: is this engine made by Detroit or GMC. Also is this engine a common one for a bus. I have been told I should get 13 miles per gallon is that realistic? There is90000 miles on this bus, what should i
I be watchining for. Thanks Neil

To whom it may concern
I have recently purchased a 1961 Western Flyer Canuck bus with a 4 cylinder 2 stroke Detroit diesel with a block no. D27 Y5162790M. Im looking for a drive train manual for it but havent found one yet, I hope you can help.
Sincerely Micah
Re: Detroit Engines Jmaxwell 1-9-02
Todd I presume these are 10's. In the intercity coaches the 6v92ta was generally set up for 320-330hp. They max at 350. 8v92 starts at 350 (non turbo) and can be pumped to 475. The 6v92ta is preferable here, since it out torques the non turbo 8. Also, many 8v92's had heating problems that was only corrected with expensive modifications (new radiators and hydraulic fan) if u ever decide to pump them up. Mileage--u can expect from 6.5 to 7.5 on average coupled to the 740 tranny. Other things to look for in an Eagle is rust to the framework. Climb into the cargo bays and look at the cross trusses and the side frames below the floor, especially at the rear of the bus cargo area and engine compartment. Make sure that what u see is not more than surface rust. If u see sections that are structurally unsound from rust, u can bet the sidewalls are in the same condition. If u see exterior rust and deterioration on the skin around the wheels, walk away, u don't want to see the rest. Eagles are notorious for rusting, literally away. If u can find one that was not run in a salt using area, then it should be ok. Another check point is adjustment to the torsions (suspension) Look inboard of the wheels, u will see some steel tubes about 4" in dia. Has a rubber core w/threaded rod (1" diameter) nut should be about 2" down on the rod. Eagles make a nice conversion, but they are definately a buyer beware item, so u should really find someone familiar w/them to look at it.

Re: Detroit Engines Dallas Farnworth 1-6-02
You didn't say what transmission the 83 has behind it, but just as a little knowledge, the 6V92 and the 8V92 were identical engines, + or - 2 cyclinders. I've used both while driving truck, and both were OK for what they were at the time. The major problem I found with them, is that they used the same main bearings as the 71 series, while putting a lot more stress on the crank shaft through added horse power. In a bus application, this is acceptable because there is never that much weight (16 tons as compared to 40 tons). For power, you would want the 8V because it can climb hills better, for econpmy, you would want the 6V because of being lighter and having fewer cyclinder. Both were solid Detroits, and have been around for years. I hope this helped.
Good Luck on your endeavour
Re: Detroit Engines Danny 6-22-04
The difference is like a V-6 chevy or a V-8 chey.drive these cars and see the difference.Well a V-6/92 is the same motor as The 8v-92 just 2 less clyn.its all about HP and tork power.
6v92T Detroit Engines JR 1-6-05
Hello, I just purchased a 79 MCI-9 with a 6v92t with an allison 740 trans. The bus runs very smooth and has a fairly new engine. When it was started up, it smoked very little to none and smokes little to none when drove.
The only problem is the bus has a very large lack of power, you have to keep it wide open on flats to do the speed limit and pulls steep hills at 10 mph. I have driven other diesels and this is not normal. What could the problem be?? IS it not getting enough fuel. Also I have noticed even on the hills in a hard strain, there is no black smoke. I need some help, thanks
Re: Detroit Engines mike davison 8-15-07
We have 8v92 turbo that has a rough idle and sounds like it don't run on all 8 cylinders and barely will pull itself in gear without giving it fuel to take off what is my problem.
Re: Detroit Engines Bill 5-28-06
I'm the new owner of a 1983 Blue Bird with a 1982 Detroit Diesel 6v92T S#6VFO94174 with 169K miles. Tho motor have no belts. The salesman tells me the fan operates off a with a hydo pump. I was reading the service manual which referance a marine engine 6V92T Silver and rcommended using 2 cycle oil in the engine. Is this correct? How may many miles can a 6V92T go in an RV with out a rebuild or replacement and at what cost?

Re: Detroit Engines Dallas Farnworth 1-7-02
Don't quote me on the horse power, but, depending on the cylinder compression, timing, and fuel, the 8V92 will have the edge on horse power. It will also out do the 6V92T on torque (which makes a lot of difference in climbing hills) by a large margin.
The Allison 740 is a good solid transmission that is still fairly easy to get parts for.
As to mileage, you may want to find out what the differentials are geared to do at operating RPM, For example, my 5.41:1 differential climbs hills quite well, but is geared out at about 53 miles per hour. I get about 11.2 mpg. If you were running with gears of around 4.10:1 you would be able to do freeway speeds and also lower your engine RPM. I have heard of people with this setup getting around 13 mpg. With the 8 cylinder motor, you may be able to gain the power up the hills and make up your fuel mileage there. The 6 cylinder is really built for lighter loads on flatter roads.
Personally, My choice would be the 8V92 because the crank shaft has one more bearing to keep it from flexing under pressure. Plus, at rebuild time, you could upgrade this engine to an 8V92T by changing the liners, cylinders and timing plus adding the turbo to it.
Both these engines, with a good overhaul will give you at least 250K miles, if you keep clean oil in them and good maintenance on them.
Either one is a good choice, check maintenance records and the general appearance of the unit.

Re: 8.2/Litre diesel squeezer Mark O'Brien 8-23-02
I need to know the steps to timing a 8.2 litre diesel squeezer detroit engine that is running in my Ford F-700.
as i live in vanuatu in the pacific manuals are as scarce as hens teeth.
Re: Detroit Engines Keith McKenzie 6-3-07
The 8V92 has more HP (about 50) than does the 6V92TA but I'll take the 6 over the 8 based on reliability and slightly better fuel mileage. My Eagle 15 has the 6V92TA and it performs well. Keith
Re: Detroit 8V92 Turbo vs. Non-Turbo Garry Sheppard 12-1-05
I'm a newby to detroit diesel (any diesel for that matter) and I'm shopping for a bus. Can you pros (OK, Semi-Pro's, Experienced folks, etc) tell me which is a better, more reliable, longer life, economical, or maintenance-free) engine regarding large motorhome:
factory 8V92 Non-Turbo vs. rebuilt 8V92 Turbo?
Thanks in advance...
Re: 8.2/Litre diesel squeezer David 2-23-04
Hello Mark,

I am have a timing issue with my 8.2 engine, so if you found some info I would appreciate any helpful hints.

Re: Detroit Engines Don Fairchild 9-15-03
Abdu; How many engines do you need and what horse power do you need. The 8VF tells me they are 8V92T engines
Re: 6v92T Detroit Engines Josh 5-1-06
Being a School Bus driver i've had experience with 6v92 detroit engines. Yes they are slow on hills but not that slow, even though the carpenter i drive is set at 250HP it climbs a moderate hill at around 25 mph fully loaded (84p). I would need more information about the weight and grade of the hill. One thing i would suggest to begin with is the air filter which is usually under sized for this engine. Two-cycle detroits suck alot of air!!! do not over estimate your air filter which will last half the mileage of a regular one.
