What year did GMC stop making the RTS frame with stainless steel. I've heard 79', 80', and 82'(only one can be right). It's very important for me, as I live on the east coast of Florida where there's a great deal of salt in the air. Thanks.
It probably doesn't really matter, as the stainless in those buses was extremely light. The RTS's were built to have a wash job about once a week, which included washing the under carriage. I have a mid 80's RTS from Ohio that has an under carriage thats in great shape, but then again, I have gotten parts from a mid 70's from Wyoming that was almost eaten through with rust. look at each unit you want to buy, and figure out if it's what you want. Even ginsu knifes rust over time.
The '79 RTS had more stainless steel than the newer models, but as far I know only the bulkheads were affected. The body is 409 stainless on all of them, and the center square frame beams that run through much of the bus has always been steel. If you live in Florida the best thing to do is look at the bulkheads (the dividing section of metal that hangs down underneath the bus and fore and aft of the wheels), and see how rusty and eaten through they are. That will give you a good indication of what else is down there. If you want a really good bus, get one from the West Coast down to Arizona and Texas-- they will have virtually no rust.
