Wanted Bus for Scout Troop Jed Doggett 2-25-02
We are in need of a mc8/9 or an eagle so we can send more boys on weekend trips and summer camp. We are a charitable organization and if you could donate any portion of a good bus we could help a lot more boys by making expenses much lower for transportation. We are located north of Houston TX. Thanks.

I don't want to rain on your parade but you can pay for a lot of charter bus time for what it is going to cost for you to keep an old motorcoach safe to transport a Scout Troop.

The cost of operation just starts with the purchase cost. A local church had a belt break on a MC8 and it proceeded to trash the radiator. $5K plus the cost of putting up the 40-some people in a hotel for three days and they were able to come on home.

Unless you are out and about in your bus at least 10K miles per year, you can't really afford to operate your own bus.

A good used school bus would be a better choice since they cost less to start with and cost less to operate.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to e-mail me directly.

Good luck.

Mark O.

In addition to the points Mark made, keep in mind that you will need commercial insurance for a coach used like this. This adds a lot to the yearly expenses.

I also don't want to spoil your adventures, however are you aware you have to have a certiified passenger bus driver, even for a non profit organization before you can haul kids, even for free? Also the liability insurance is astonomical, We found it much cheaper to charter a local hauler much more econimical and if the rig breaks down it is not your organizations responsibility to repair or to tow it.
