Hello DR
I have several Gillig buses in good shape, all with either rear engine CATS or mid engine Cummins or Detroits.
The rear engine CATs are 3208s (636 c.i. diesel V-8s) with Allison automatics, and run excellent.
However, they are 35 foot, not 40. I doubt you'd miss the space, and most 40 footers are 3 axle, not always an asset in some situations.
These buses are real easy to convert, as they are a simple design to begin with. I don't sell junk or rob people (I'm a high school teacher, not a used bus salesman) and am sure I could find you something in the lower end of your price range that would serve you well.
Call (559)251-3814 or E-mail if you get a second. I am in Fresno, CA
I have a 40' GMC Diesel 4905. Already converted for a band bus but you can change it. Here is a web site with pics. Take a look and let me know what you think. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Oaks/2645/bus1.html

Call Dick Allen (619-445-3878 San Diego area) and ask him about his big bus. I an advertising a 1958 Flexible Star Cruiser for him and I do not have the information on the larger bus. It is solid and may be what you are looking for.
