8.2L DETROIT RAN ROVER 12-10-00
I HAVE A BUS THAT HAS THIS ENGINE IN IT. OIL PRESSURE IS GOOD, BUS IT PRODUCES OIL SMOKE. WHAT IS THE SPEC. OF THIS ENGINE? LOCAL DETROIT DEALER SAYS EXCHANGE IS THE ONLY POSSIBLITY FOR 6K$. IS THIS ABOUT RIGHT? HOW RELIABLE IS THIS ENGINE? THANKS, RANDY
Re: 8.2L DETROIT Mark O. 12-13-00
The 8.2L is an okay motor, not as good as the Cat 3208 but a lot better than the Cummins 555.

All three engines would be considered medium duty as compared to the heavy duty 2-cycle Detroit Diesels or the light duty Navistar 6.9/7.3/Powerstroke.

You say you are getting oil smoke. Are you sure, as in what color is the smoke, when does it smoke, and does it ever stop smoking? Are you using oil? If you are using oil, are you sure it isn't dribbling out on the ground?

Most of the 8.2L's were rated in the 180-230 H.P. range. If you don't expect to keep up with the 'hounds and go up every hill without slowing down, the 8.2L is a pretty good engine.

$6K is perhaps a little high but it is in the neighborhood.

Good luck and happy trails.

Mark O.

Don't diagnostic to quick by the smoke,,unless you're a top notch mechanic or used to it good!! to know the condition of cylinder/ring, do a leak down test and first and foremost you can't know the full condition of an engine by just LOOKING at it!!! (even blonde and large breast got pesty temper)!!!
Procedure is leak down test, fews guide valves check, timing chain back lash check, longitunal crankshaf free play. this will tell you.
good luck

My 8.2 smokes when cold. When warm all is fine. You didn't mention if yours is turbo or not.

I bought a core for $100.00 last week. The place I bought it from had two 8.2N's for sale. Don't know the price for the runners.

You could put your bus on a chassis dyno and measure the crankcase pressure under load. This would give some idea of the condition of your engine.

8.2's are loved by some hated by others. As are most things in life. I like mine. So far.

The engine smokes blue when cold and goes away after warm-up. Also, blue smoke under load(acceleration). I don't know oil cosumption because I haven't had it very long. Thanks, Randy
Re: 8.2L DETROIT Mike 12-17-00
Hello,,

Why would anyone endorse an engine that has no sleeves?? a Cat 3208 has a regular honed block just like a car engine. That is why I laugh when people pay another 4 thousand for a diesel powered pick up versus a petro fueled pick up. A detroit 92 71 60 50 series have sleeves or cylinder liners what ever way it is described. If this 8.2 liter Detroit has sleeves KEEP IT!! rebuild it. Mike

Where can locate this 8.2L Detroit that you're talking about?

www.spaldings.com They have an 800 number. You want the truck division and ask for Tim or Brad.

I beleive that we might have the same type of bus. Mine is a Ford 60pass. with a 5sp. trans.

Ours is a GMC/Bluebird with an Allison automatic. Do you happend to know the maker and model of your transmission?

I like the bus, because it is easy to drive.

We like ours because it fits in our driveway. If it were any bigger we would to park it on the street.

You can Email me at Randyf-18@cs.com.
I tried emailing you, but it got kicked back. My email address is in the header to this message.

Thankyou, Randy
