Towing with a 3.8 liter Grand Caravan Brian 5-14-03
I need some practical advice. I'm considering buying a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan with a 3.8 liter engine and factory installed tow package - engine & tranny cooler, etc. I tow a Coleman pop-up - about 2,500 lbs. loaded. Dodge claims that this van will handle towing 3,800 lbs., but I'm always sceptical of this stuff. Many people have given me a bunch of theory, but I want real-life experience. Anyone out their with some practical experience with this van, or similar?

The 3.8L motor has a good power band. I had a Chrysler Town & Country with the setup you mentioned. It will handle the popup without problem on most trips. Good size mountains will pull anything down. No exception here when you head for the Rockies. If you want to be sure, buy a Durango. There is not much difference in the gas mileage. I know. That's what I'm driving now.

If it helps you any I pull a Viking 2460T with a 99 Caravan with the 3.3 engine no problems here just get the towing package and you will be ok

I have pulled a Jayco 1006 all up and down the west coast with all the mountains in between. I drive a 1993 Caravan with a 3.3L and factory Tow package which is the smartest option any body can get. I have over 130,000 miles on original transmition. I also service the trany every 40,000. I have been looking a getting a 2003 Grand Caravan Sport with the 3.8L & factory tow package. Only I am thinking of getting the Jayco Kiwi 18F. The 2003 has 65 more horse power than my '93 and a lot better trany. The new Caravan will pull any tent trailer just fine.

I used to pull my PU with a similar setup. Granted my van was a 94. It pulled it well, never had a problem power wise. I did have to change the transmission twice though. Both times under extended warranty. Don't know for certain if it was the PU or not. Upgraded to a Durango.

I have pulled a 13 foot trillium with my 87 and later a 90 Grand Caravan for a combined 6000 miles without problems These were only 3.0 litre engines.
I now have a 16" Dolphin fiberglass trailer, (not a popup) which I have pulled over 20,000 miles with a 1996 Caravan (Shorty) and with my present 1999 Grand caravan. I have the 3.3 engine We avarage almost 19 miles to the gallon while towing.
