Advice on Towing Steve S 8-7-02
Hi, my wife and I are considering buying a light weight travel trailer to tow with our 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan LE. We have looked at the Coleman pop-up's, but we've heard from some people that a light weight travel trailer is better. But we are also aware that this is not necessarily the ideal tow vehicle - but it's the only option we have at the moment. Any constructive feedback or suggestions welcome, and thanks.

What is the tw for a 1991 s10 blazer w/4.3 4x4 auto. i will be towing a 4x8 trailer with about 1500lbs from springfeild ma to austi tx
Re: Advice on Towing paul tymchuk 8-14-02
I towed a starcraft tent trailer with my 98 grand caravan sport equiped with the 3.3l engine and the trailer package. it is rated to tow a trailer up to 3500 lbs with with a frontal area of less than 34 sq. ft. that means a small 7' wide trailer could only be 5' tall. chrysler basically says you can only tow a tent trailer even if you have the heavy duty towing package.

i didn't even notice the tent trailer behind my van and could easily mantain 70 mph on the interstates when i went into the us.
i wouldn't tow even a lite weight travel trailer with my van, i went out and bought a new vehicle when we moved up to a larger trailer.

just my 2 cents worth,
paul

Steve:
I have found pop-ups are not handy when you stop for lunch or go swimming or for taking a nap etc. If you have a six cylinder engine you probably have enough power to tow a light weight trailer. We just returned from a holiday here in BC with our 18' boler trailer. I have a 6 cyl. Chev. Blazer (S10) and we towed the Boler down and then back up the steepest highway grade in Canada (18%). I also had a two man expedition kayak on the roof of the SUV on this trip. The trip uphill took 1 1/2 hours and while it was slow going, we had no trouble. I just put the auto transmission in low gear and waited until we got to the top of the hill. This road is gravel too.
Our Boler trailer is for sale. It has everything. H/C pressure water, furnace, toilet / shower, 3-way fridge, gas stove and oven, sleeps 4. a great unit.
Regards. Bob

Hi I have a 1991 Ford Aerostar with a 3.0L V6.. Those mini vans have a lot of power.. As long as you don't have a 2.2L 4 cylinder you shouldn't have any truble towing a pop up travel trailer... My father has a 1992 Dodge Caravan Le and it has a 3.3 V6... As long as you have a Transmission cooler you should be fine... Those Dodge Caravans are known to have transmission problems... I have towed my Trilium Travel trailer 1,500 miles with my fathers minivan... From Canada to Myrtle Beach with no truble.. Just make sure you keep your van in good working order... do Tune up's every six months due to the fact that trailers will put a strain on your engine...
If I have been of any help to you.. If you think I can help you again please E mail me at fenderman20002000@yaho.com
Re: Advice on Towing M & K FitzPatrick 8-16-02
Steve, pop ups are much easier to tow then a regular travel trailer because of the amount of frontal area.
Travel trailers are designed better each year but there is no getting over the fact, that they are a BIG brick turned into wind. Pop up's are smaller bricks but there closed height makes it much easier on the tow vehicles motor and transmision.

I have an Astro van that pulls a 3500# boat easily in overdrive even on mild grades. My travel trailer weighs in at 2500 lbs and although it is much lighter, I cannot use overdrive when pulling it. Not enough torque from my V6 engine even with the factory towing package and gear ratio.

With your front wheel drive van, I would suggest a pop up trailer and make sure you get a transmission cooler on first.

Re: HOW DO I HOOK-UP TRAILER LIGHTS TO MY VAN????? MR ED 9-11-03
Hi Manny, You are lucky that you have a connection on your van, that is ready to hook up lights and brakes, and battery charger.
For starts,J C Whitney has the right part, plus the wiring to go with it and it is all colored coded to your van, this ia a 7 pole connection. The center one is for the van to charge the battery in the trailer,so watch this one as this one is hot unless you disconnect the batteru terminal on the trailer battery.
Then you will have to use a 12 volt light tester to determine what is,right turn, left turn running lights and brake connection if you have one.
Good luck.

Need to get a wiring diagram looking for lights - stop turn and brake wiring schematic for a jayco tent trailer
Re: Advice on Towing Dave 1-16-03
Towing will put extra strain on your engine and transmission. You need an oil cooler and a transmission cooler to counteract this. Also maintain your engine and transmission according to the stricter 'severe service' schedule.
Transmission will need servicing 2 to 3 times as often as normal. A new transmission will cost $2000-$3000.

I do not know how to connect all these wires back up. Please respond A.S.A.P.!!!! (all of these wires are the ones that come up through the floor in the front of the trailer by the tanks)
