I have a chance to purchase a nice Ford Ranger, '96, with a 2.3L engine.
My question could this vehicle effectively pull a Coleman camper with a GVWR of 1430?
The max distance one way would be around 300 miles over mostly highway with a few inclines.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff C.

Hi Jeff..have you purchased your truck yet? I've been through this myself. I have a 3.0 6-cyl minivan and was in the dark about what I could tow. I had a great hitch installed and a transmission cooler and I can tow up to 3500# safely. If you do the same, you'll have no problem towing the trailer you spoke of earlier!
A 2.3L engine is not much displacement! You may be limited by power as to how much weight you can drag behind you. A better choice may be a 4.0L (Jeep) or a 4.3L (GM) engine, with 4.10 gears. This combination will allow you to *easily* pull up to a 24 foot older camper with a weight of 3,500 pounds. I live in the mountians, and I know going up hill can be hard on a setup not designed for towing. Dont forget the tranny cooler!!
