CAMPGROUND ACCEPTANCE KEN ROBINSON 3-22-00
IS IT REALLY TRUE THAT SKOOLIES ARE OFTEN BANNED FROM CAMPGROUNDS. WE ARE LOOKING
FORWARD TO OUR FIRST LONG TRIP
AND PLAN TO GO TO THE SMOKY
MOUNTAIN AREA. ARE NATIONAL
PARKS ALLOWED TO "DISCRIMINATE" LIKE PRIVATE
CAMPGROUNDS? WHERE SHOULD WE
GO THAT WE WILL BE WELCOME?
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

Campgrounds are private property and can pick and choose theit customers at will.
Fed recreation areas are public, and open , even to shoolies, but the bad reputation procedes you so you might get more watching ,, so pay attention to the rulles:

Hi Ken,

We are on our first trip with a new schoolie, and we've been out about 3 months. I had the same concern as you did, but here is my experience. I was turned away once at an "RV resort" (the term resort was a stretch) in upstate IL. The owner claimed some kind of "age limit" of RV's at the park (15 years old) - although I doubt if I had a 1985 air-stream I would have been turned away! Anyway, my bus is not that rad. either. The conversion is new, and I think very clean. The paint job is a bit "industrial" black and silver - kind of X-files. Outside of that one turn away though, we have been accepted elsewhere. I have tended to shy away from RV parks that are heavy on seasonal, "retired" recreation and have instead looked for private campgrounds that are a bit less "uppity". In Wheeler guide the 3 star and below seem hospitable. A good sign I have found is if they have tent sites. State Parks have been no problem.
Oddly enough the cops have also left us alone on the road, and the truckers seem to get into the bus. We have stayed at alot of truck-stops with very few odd looks.

As it has been said on this board, appearance makes a difference. My paint scheme may not look great along side a bunch of $$$$$ Rv's, but I blend right in amoung the 18 wheelers.

Hope this helps.

JP
