I've been surfin the net for a school bus to convert. I like to have an automatic 6 speed tranny, but not sure which engine is more 'bullet proof' Detroit 6v71 or the 220 Cummins. I'm reading all Cummins engines except the 555 is a good choice. How do they stack up against the 6v71 Detroit? Both with & without turbo..... Thanks
Oh I have so much to learn! I didn't know there is an inline 6N71. Thanks for the help. I hope to better prepared when I do find 'THAT' bus.
I went to the Detroit Diesel website & read their version why 2 strokes are better than 4 stroke diesels. Are they telling the truth or are they just blowing diesel smoke?
AS most RV only go a few thousand miles a year , the engin choice is not a prime concern..
MUCH better to get a well maintaned {with service log} bus that will run fine , even if you have it 30 years . Condition is the only consideration in finding the right coach.
FAST FRED

Detroit is telling the truth partly. Yes 2 stroke is more powerful in that you get twice the firing as you would with a 4 stroke and the engine is smaller. But thanks to our wonderful EPA like everything else they ruined along the way they have ruined it for us bus owners by not allowing them to pass the emissions. My buses have no belts just a nice geartrain for the compressor and alternator and all the other doodads. I saw a dream bus nice Prevost with that series 60 (GREAT ENGINE) with the "T" tranny like the old buses and they have belts. So the 71 series was a great engine if not why would so many bus builders choose that engine? it was a great engine. I also have a 6v92 turbo and it is a killer engine. I LOVE the sound of the 2 strokes and I will always have them if possible
Hi, I opperate a charter boat fleet in the Caribbean, we have a total of 8 boats 6 with twin detoits, 8v53,671TI, 8V71TI, and the other two twin Cummins 555 and 6BTA. These boats are worked hard 6 times a week and in a boat there arn't any gears so it is a constant load. The cummins are good engines especially the 555 but from what I and my counterparts have seen nothing and I mean nothing can touch the detroits. If possible go with the 671. All the best,
Would Chris, operating Detroits in the Caribbean, please make contact with me. I want to discuss further his comments and recommendations. I am in St Lucia, and about to operate a boat service to the Grenadines for an Hotel. His comments would be invaluable. I also can not find any dealer or Agent listings for this region. Thanks, and if anyone else wants to chip in, please do. All advive welcome. Mel.
