To turbo or not to turbo, that is the question. Willy 5-8-00
I have an '84 carpenter bus with an Itnl. 9.0 liter diesel engine. w 5spd manual trans. I love it, it gets somewhere between 10-12 mpg on the highway and drives like a caddy. I do wish I had more power for uphill. Stock , no turbo, this engine is 180hp. someone told me that a turbo would decrease the life of the engine and would be too expensive for the amount of improvement. Right now I have just over 100,000 miles on it. also it tops out at about 63mph @ 3300 rpm. A little more power and a little more speed (70mph) would be nice. also it is not fully converted yet but I have driven it loaded and unloaded and not much difference. Thanks for any help, Willy

I agree with FF. Adding a turbo will not increase your top speed--it is limited by your rear end ratio.

The 9.0L IHC is not the best engine out there and won't take the abuse the DT466 will. Adding a turbo on a non-turbo motor is a sure prescription to engine meltdown, particularly one that has a fair number of miles on it.

Get in the slow lane going uphill and enjoy the view.

Happy trails.
