Emergency Brake Drum	Todd	10-8-07
Accidentally left my emergency brake on after stopping during a recent trip. About 5 miles down the road sparks and smoke was everywhere. Realized what I had done after getting out, looking under the bus, and the emergency brake drum on the driveshaft was glowing red. I felt like such a dumbass. It's a 1980 Chevrolet/Carpenter 66 passenger. Anyone ever changed one of these out? How hard of a job is it?

Changing an emergency brake drum isn't all that hard. You need to block the bus from moving before you do anything because it requires you to remove the driveline. Unless the drum got so hot it cracked and pieces broke off I doubt it is so bad it has to be replaced. I would check to see if all that needs replacing is the lining. I would also look into installing a light that tells you the emergencry brake is engaged. Mark O. Castle Rock, WA

Looked at it closer.....it's cracked...gonna have to replace the whole drum assembly.

If you need to completely replace the brake drum, before you try your neighborhood big GM dealer for the parts go to a truck wrecking yard. If there isn't one close by go online because they are all over the country. Even with shipping the cost should be considerably lower than from the OEM. If you don't need the bus right now it may be helpful to remove the brake drum so that you can get accurate measurements of the drum width, diameter, and the size and shape of the bolt pattern. With the make and model of the chassis and the make and model of the transmission you should be able to find the correct replacement drum. You might also try your local industrial/commercial brake parts supply house. Ott's Friction Supply (www.ottsfrictionsupply.com) in Portland, OR is a good source for brake parts (they supply a lot of the aftermarket brake parts for NAPA). There's what I call a "bus yard" pretty close to me...gonna go down there in a few days to see what they got. Take off the emergency brake before moving? Really? Ha Ha.

Is that your ONLY emergency/parking brake? The "driveline attached" type drum brake never worked well, so most folks just discarded them when they wore out. Do you have air brakes or hydraulic?
