Requirements for bus to rv conversion LebBuck 12-6-00
I just bought a 1985 school bus. It's in great shape, but I think I want to convert it to legally be an RV.

Does anyone know what the minimum requirements are to be an RV? My initial thoughts are that it has to have a bathroom, sink/running water etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

The requirements vary from state to state , so you will have to check with your locak DMV.

Also insurance is hard to get on a skoolie , so check with your insurer to find out their minimums.

--Where can you get the best liability insurance rates? Do you offer the fact that it is a conversion. It has been my experience that most companies don't want to deal with conversions.

Trust me, I would love to keep it a schoolie, but I'm wondering about the costs. I checked with our local DMV and they said license plates run $300/yr for a schoolie vs $50 for an RV.

Don't know if this is correct, but it has me wondering.

Thanks for the info.

In Washington State once you remove the seats your School Bus becomes something else. And that is all they really want around here.

I left two back seat in because they had heaters attached. No problems with just two seats.

Of course the insurance guy is a bit more picky. The is insured as a commmercial vehicle until the conversion is done.

HEY BUSBOY
AS HERE IN NEW YORK TO CHANGE THE REG. YOU MUST FIRST TAKE OUT THE SEATS. YOU CAN LEAVE IN THE FIRST TWO AND THEY MUST HAVE SEAT BELTS.. AND AS FOR THE INS.PAYMENTS RV'S ARE MOSTLY INSURED FOR 6 MONTHS AND MOST OF THEM ARE LIMITED TO A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MILEAGE. THE OTHER GUY SEEMS TO THINK THAT RV'S ARE LESS EXPENSIVE FOR INSURANCE THEN SKOOLIES, NOT TRUE HERE IN N.Y. THEY ARE CONSIDERED A PERSONAL VEHICLE.. I WAS TOLD THREW YOUR LOCAL MOTOR VEHICLE DEPT AS LONG AS I DIDN'T MODIFY THE MOTOR OR DRIVE TRAN IT WAS NOT MODIFIED AND AS FAR AS THE CONVERSION IT SEEMS TO BE COOL..I HOPE TO LIVE TOTALLY IN MINE FULL TIME IT VERY SOON,AND MAYBE GET SOME OF THE WINTER IN IT ......

I think RV insurance would be cheaper than commercial vehicle insurance in this state.

We want to use our bus as a traveler. It would be nice to go extended trips and still be comfortable.

To that end I put jute backing under the carpet for insulation and got a little noise reduction as a bonus. I can hear the Allison make weird noises now.

Re: Bus, to RV, Ya are SCARING me!! Don 6-8-03
I am in the process of buying a friends '87 International BB, 72 pass bus. He tore out most of the seats, and already has rough framing and paneling ready for the bathroom/shower area, the closet, and the kitchen area. Perfect for me! My dog and I are moving to Arizona, from Florida, as soon as the closing on my house, next month.
Buddy says, use his registration til I get to Arizona, then change the title and registration. Any ideas? Don
