I just bought an incredibly cool, converted 1964 Chevy School Bus Motorhome. I had no idea how hard it would be to get liability insurance and I don't understand why. Judging from the postings on this website, I'm not the only one that's having trouble.
I have been with State Farm for over twenty years. I have three trucks, two cars, and a motorcycle insured through them. Sorry, no school buses.
An independent agent wrote me a policy with Progressive just last week. June 7, 2007. When I got my paperwork it said that converted and non-converted school buses are unacceptable vehicles. I called and questioned it. My policy is in the process of being cancelled.
I called GMAC, sorry, no luck.
I can't find anyone else to write me a policy.
I know there are a lot of old bus motorhomes out there, there has to be a company that will cover us.
I live in Alabama. I have a good driving record, a good credit rating, a good job, plus I'm good looking. Well, OK, three out of four ain't too bad is it?
I don't know if this will help or not, but we have a 1986 Ford Ward school bus that we converted into a motorhome/camper for hunting/camping and we had a hard time finding insurance also. We finally were able to find liability insurance through GMAC of St. Louis over the internet. They explained to us that they did do conversion insurance and that the premium would start out slightly higher at first, but that you have the option to lower it after the first statement. The toll free number is 1-800-325-1190. Just to give you an idea we pay about $315 every 6 months. Let me know if this helps.
No luck with GMAC? HOGWASH! goto the insurance files in this forum and see hundreds insured through GMAC i pay $112 every 6 mos. also search the messages for insurance to learn where you went wrong.
Thanks to this site I was able to get a quote from GMAC for my cherished 1966 International/Wayne. They quoted me $332 for 6 months for $100.000-$300,000 coverage. Unfortunately, they will only cover liability, with no options for full comp for fire, theft, collision etc.
I still plan to check Progressive, but at least I have hope again.
For the record, Truck Insurance Exchange through Farmers covered my bus for years, but stopped writing bus conversions and cancelled me in 2003.
