Re: oil for 6-71 detroit desiel by Mark O. | |

Hi, In my experience, using a good oil that meets or exceeds DD recommendations is a whole lot less expensive than not doing so. Oil is ifinitely less expensive than an engine rebuild. Having said that, single weight oil works much better in a DD 2-cycle than multi-weight. In older engines particularly, it seems as if the multi-weight finds extra knotholes from which to leak. In my 8V-71 I would use a gallon in the first 2K miles, a gallon in the next 1K miles, and a gallon every 500 miles after that. If I used multi-weight oil my oil consumption would almost double. Delo 100 40W can be purchased at almost any bulk oil distributor, usually for less per gallon than if you order it from your local parts house. Mark O. |
