|1955 Superior Coach?||Bart||1-15-06|
|I found an old hippie bus that's a 1955 Superior Coach. It's impounded and I could get it for a good deal (about $500). It's a flat nose rear engine, the engine runs well, but the brakes need replaceing. It's got air brakes but was made before they were fail safe, so I would need to upgrade that to a fail-safe system, any ideas on cost or difficulty on doing that? I have no clue what kind of motor, best guess is about a 550cu in something (gas) and it has a manual trans. Any ideas on the probability of the project would be appriciated.|
BTW, the plan would be to do a simple conversion (beds/couches) so I could gather up a bunch of buddies and go on some adventure (College), so nothing too fancy.

|The fail safe is in the air cylinder itself. How it works is that there is a big spring that locks the brakes when there is no air pressure, so you need air pressure (60 to 90psi) to take the parking brake off and the system bleeds off air pressure in a controlled manner to stop. This is why there no change in the force required to push the brake pedal, and you brake harder based on how FAR you push the pedal rather than how HARD you push the pedal.|
The good news is that most of your components (compressor, drier, tanks, hardline) can be re used. The bad news is that if the air brake cylinder used doesn't work the way I have outlined above, then the air system will need to be re-plumbed and the newer brake cylinders installed. You will also need a newer style brake pedal valve and will need to add or replace the parking brake valve.
I'd really appreciate seeing pictures of this brake set up.
