Re: oil for 6-71 detroit desiel by J D Turner
Post New Message For most purposes, Detroit Diesel recommends a 40 weight oil meeting API Service CF-2 in their two-cycle Diesel engines. That's what I decided to go with in my '84 Crown. Delo 100 (as opposed to Delo 400) meets that requirement. I ordered two cases from my local Napa dealer a year ago, and used just a bit over one case changing the oil (and filters), and the rest topping it off in 6000 miles.

That said, I talked with the maintenance manager of a school district that owned 10 Crowns (including mine) for about 20 years, and he told me that they had always used Delo 400 15-40 and "Never had a problem with any of the engines". 10 buses totalling about 2.5 million miles in 20 years with no problems would indicate to me that you probably aren't going to have a lot of issues if you do decide to go with the 15-40.

He did express concern about starting the engine in the cold with 40 weight, but I've had very little starting issues even on Mt. Hood in the winter.

You can download the Lubrication Requirements from Detroit Diesel here:

Hope this helps...
