|For most purposes, Detroit Diesel recommends a 40 weight oil meeting API Service CF-2 in their two-cycle Diesel engines. That's what I decided to go with in my '84 Crown. Delo 100 (as opposed to Delo 400) meets that requirement. I ordered two cases from my local Napa dealer a year ago, and used just a bit over one case changing the oil (and filters), and the rest topping it off in 6000 miles.|
That said, I talked with the maintenance manager of a school district that owned 10 Crowns (including mine) for about 20 years, and he told me that they had always used Delo 400 15-40 and "Never had a problem with any of the engines". 10 buses totalling about 2.5 million miles in 20 years with no problems would indicate to me that you probably aren't going to have a lot of issues if you do decide to go with the 15-40.
He did express concern about starting the engine in the cold with 40 weight, but I've had very little starting issues even on Mt. Hood in the winter.
You can download the Lubrication Requirements from Detroit Diesel here: http://www.detroitdiesel.com/support/on-highway/manuals/Lubricants_Fuels_Coolants/LubricatingOilFuelandFilters_7SE270_0509.pdf
Hope this helps...

In my experience, using a good oil that meets or exceeds DD recommendations is a whole lot less expensive than not doing so. Oil is ifinitely less expensive than an engine rebuild.
Having said that, single weight oil works much better in a DD 2-cycle than multi-weight. In older engines particularly, it seems as if the multi-weight finds extra knotholes from which to leak. In my 8V-71 I would use a gallon in the first 2K miles, a gallon in the next 1K miles, and a gallon every 500 miles after that. If I used multi-weight oil my oil consumption would almost double.
Delo 100 40W can be purchased at almost any bulk oil distributor, usually for less per gallon than if you order it from your local parts house.
