I bought a 1985 gmc schoolie. Having trouble locating the vin# on the 366.
Can someone point me in the right direction. Also contacted I C corp for information and manuals on the body.
Not much info on body manuals but they are sending me what they have.
I've only ever seen VIN numbers stamped on motorcycle engines. There's usually a casting number on the block, right above the oil pan or around where the freeze plugs are. There are also casting numbers on the heads, but all these numbers usually correspond to the last few numbers of the VIN or they don't correspond at all.
I've seen tags for diesel engines on the valve covers, but I don't think those numbers match the VIN either.
I don't believe they ever put a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on any removable or changeable oomponent like an engine, transmission, etc.
You should be able to find a SERIAL number on any engine, most commonly found on a stamped metal plate, usually on the side or near the bottom of the engine block.
So, the VIN is a permanent number for the CHASSIS, not the engine.
Feel free to call if you have any question. I've owned about 100 different cars, trucks, buses, motorbikes, etc.
