84 Thomas B-700 65 passenger bus deadhead 6-9-05
I'm lookin' at buyin' an 84 Thomas B-700 65 passenger bus to convert to RV. The present owner doesn't know the engine size, but thinks it's an 8.2 liter. It has an automatic trans, and air brakes with 184K miles. Where do I look on the bus to determine the engine and trans combo. I can't find any stickers under the hood or inside.

In or around the driver's area there is a plate with a VIN number on it. If you take the VIN number to the NADA website (, you can get it interpreted for free.

8.2L is a pretty common deisel motor in these busses and it's typically mated to an Allison trans (AT 545 or similar). There should always be a tag on the motor and tranny to tell you what they are. Usually stamped steel or aluminum.

Hope that helps!

Thanks a lot, I'll look around again as soon as I can get back over there with some more time.
