|81 bluebird conversion with Cat diesel ??||Pat||4-12-05|
|I am looking at a 1981 bluebird conversion. The bus has a 3208 Cat Diesel and 4 speed Allison. The conversion to motorhome is quite nice. My question are.|
1. Any information on the cat Diesel good/bad?
2. Any information on the Allison 4 speed good/bad?
3. Bus is listed at 17K. Any opinion on value.

|17k is within the realm of reasonable cost for a conversion. If you look at http://www.pettypb.com/bus/, that conversion cost just shy of 12k. Bruingilda is a 1976, so the conversion your looking at is 5 years newer and a deisel as opposed to gas.|
Caterpillar wrote the book on industrial deisel engines and from my experiance working on the 14L straight six, they make a bullet-proof motor. Allison is no slouch, either, when it comes to transmissions.
My advice would be to take a look at the quality of craftsmanship and the parts/appliances used. Does the seller have documentation of wiring and plumbing? Any receipts for driveline service? If the owner is meticulous and the crafting is high quality and the appliances are what you'd find in a mid-market to high-end RV, then 17k is a fair price. I would expect fit and finish to be as good or better than BruinGilda. I would also expect the tires in good to great condition.
